With being able to reconnect in person this Holiday Season, we wanted to outline some safe tips and tricks for responsibly drinking for your upcoming events and gatherings.

Holiday Tips

1. Enjoy in Moderation!

Remember your typical drink amounts and plan to count them. Consumption wise, a standard Beer is 12 oz., 5 oz. for Wine, and 1.5 oz. for liquor. Keep your pours and drink-sizes pure. Keep a close eye on your friends and family.

Check out Ontario’s Alcohol Use and Safe Drinking Guide.

2. Hydrate!

Remember to alternate your drinks with water, carbonated water, or other non-alcoholic drinks of your choice. This will ensure your gathering with friends and family will last longer. Remember to provide various non-alcoholic drink options. Rotate a water after each alcoholic beverage.

3. Food!

What kind of Holiday party doesn’t have food? From finger foods to full on roasted turkeys, ensure you and your guests have plenty of options to eat. When there is food in your stomach the alcohol is absorbed more slowly. Side tip: present food with less salt, as salty snacks will drive your thirst.

4. Mocktails and Non-Alcoholic Options!

There were definitive shifts throughout the pandemic for self-care and a move away from alcoholic beverages for consumption. Create a couple of mocktails that everyone can enjoy at your party. Some simple recipes can be found here:

5. Plan Ahead!

Ensure all your guests have a safe way to and from the gathering. Whether it’s Uber, Lyft, Taxi, or carpooling with a designated driver – have a Plan. Ensure no one drinks and drives.

Make sure to know the Ontario Driver’s license laws.

6. Prepare for the Night!

Thoughts to consider:

  • “Do I have enough cash?”
  • “Can I stay the night?”
  • “Can my brother pick me up?”
  • “What is the weather like outside?”
  • “Is my phone charged?”

They are all internal conversations worth having before a night out.

We are wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season. Please drink responsibly.
