There is a great emphasis placed on staying current in any profession. If you attend networking events, tradeshows, or even food handling courses – you are investing in your future. So, to help you, we are outlining some important questions you should ask yourself to help determine if it is time to “Refresh” your Smart Serve® Ontario training.

Does your Smart Serve Certification expire?

By law, in the Province of Ontario, you are not required to retake your Smart Serve® training as it currently does not expire. However, at the discretion of the employer for some careers, Re-Certification is necessary to work and for some it is part of their House Policy. If you have a very specific career path and are actively working anywhere that alcohol beverages are sold, served, sampled, or made available for the public. It might be time for you to carefully consider whether it will help you make safer and better decisions at work. Talk to your employer about options that might be available to you. What costs are involved?

Unexpected expenses are always a major turn-off. The fee for Re-Certification is not a major cost, when you consider the level of responsibility involved in selling or serving alcohol beverages and fully understanding strategies that may help you on the job. You have the flexibility to start and stop your online training however, the Training and Final Test need to be completed within 30 days of purchase.

I already completed my training, why do I need an Online Account too?

An Online Account allows you to purchase courses, redeem a Token, and view your Smart Serve® Certificate number. If you have completed your training but do not have an Individual Online Account you will need to Register. When you complete the set-up, the system will link your Certification number to your online profile. If there are any issues with this process (Legal Name, Date of Birth, etc.) please contact our Customer Service team directly Monday – Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm EST. Register or Login Now

In the end, it is ultimately your decision (or your employers) to ensure that your knowledge of the current laws and expectations is clear. At the end of the day, you have to make the best decision for your future and understand your own risks and liabilities when selling, serving, or handling alcohol.
